ReplyDeleteA friend's child was diagnoised with a rare cancer and while she was at the hospital with that child and the hubby was taking care of the other 2 kids. I organized and cooked meals for them from friends and myself. I had it to where they didn't have to cook dinner for 3 months, with food being delivered every other day. It was such a great feeling.

ReplyDeleteIn February of this year the house we rent caught fire due to a leaky chimney. We lost half our belongings and no one was hurt. Following is a list of those who helped us and their contributions.
ReplyDeleteKrogers: $1000 cash
Krogers employees: multiple tv's, furniture, sundries, clothing, kitchen appliances, and $500 cash
Salvation Army: furniture
Red Cross: $1000 cash
Landlord: rebuilt the damaged areas, replaced all the plumbing and wiring throughout the entire structure, has provided us with temporary housing since then and we will be moving back in before Christmas.
They will probably never see this post, but to all those generous souls who have contributed during our time of need, my wife and I will be eternally grateful.

Every year we left each of our children (we have 4) take names from the Giving Tree and then we purchase those items and usually a few extras. We also enjoy doing a Secret Santa for a family in the neighborhood. Christmas is an amazing time to teach love and service!

ReplyDeleteI wanted to leave a comment to Richard, who posted before mine: God bless you and your family! I was happy to hear that you should be settled by Christmas. I pray that you will always feel of others' love and God's love for you whenever you see the items have been donated to your family. I believe that trials happen to strengthen us and build our faith, and to give others the opportunity to serve.
ReplyDeleteHope you all have a Merry Christmas!
I recently met an old homeless man that had just moved to our town. I got to talking to him and found out he used to be in the military. After talking to him for about an hour I headed home with my grandkids and felt as though I really needed to do something. I ended up packing up a bunch of food, drinks and a blanket and took them to him. I about cried when I saw tears in his eyes. I couldn't help but wonder how many people passed this man by and didn't even look at him.
ReplyDeleteI have so much love and respect for those who have fought for our country. I really wish I could have done more for that man.

We have a homeless shelter in town that I like to volunteer at with my sister and a couple friends. We collect things through our church a few months in advance and I enjoy passing things out and watching the gratitude in people's eyes as they receive basic items. Funny how even though you are helping others, you feel like you're the one on the receiving end? :)
ReplyDeleteThat' previous post was from me too!

I am part of OperationLove: Reunited, an organization of photographers who give back to our countrymen by doing 2 free session of the Military Family and I send an album of all the prints to the soldier over seas. =) I love it and what a joy it is!

ReplyDeleteI donate my hair to Wigs for Kids or Locks of Love about every 4 to 5 years. Also, starting this August, my children will have to plan and execute a community service project before being able to have a birthday party. I want them to be grateful for anything they receive, not feel entitled.
ReplyDeletea great act that has been done for me is my mom has been really helping us out lately with just everything, she's just so awesome
